Privacy
This page covers useconatus.com, the documentation site you are reading. It does not cover Conatus itself. A Conatus server you run sends no analytics anywhere, to me or to anyone else, and it has no phone-home check. The two are separate, and the rest of this page is only about the website.
The site sets no cookies
Section titled “The site sets no cookies”There is no consent banner here because there is nothing to consent to. The analytics run in PostHog’s cookieless mode, which stores nothing on your device. No cookies, no local storage, no session storage.
The site itself does keep two things in your browser’s storage, separately from the analytics: whether you picked the light or dark theme and which sidebar sections you left open. Both are choices you made, neither leaves your browser and clearing site data resets them.
Visitors are counted with a hash that PostHog computes on its own servers from your IP address, your browser’s user agent and the site’s hostname, mixed with a random value that is thrown away at the end of each day. The hash cannot be turned back into an IP address. When the day’s random value is deleted, the link between today’s visits and tomorrow’s is gone too, so a repeat visitor is counted again as a new one.
That tradeoff is on purpose. I’d rather have slightly skewed numbers than be able to see how many times you opened the webpage.
What is measured
Section titled “What is measured”Four things:
- Which pages get opened and which page you arrived from.
- Clicks on links and buttons, such as the GitHub star link on the front page.
- How long pages take to load and render.
- JavaScript errors the site throws, so a broken page gets noticed.
PostHog processes this in its EU region. Nothing is sold, shared with advertisers or used to track you across other websites. If your browser sends a Do Not Track header, the site records nothing at all.
Blocking the script also works and breaks nothing. Every page reads fine without it, and most content blockers already stop it.
Why measure anything
Section titled “Why measure anything”I want to know which docs pages people actually read and where the install guide loses them. That is the whole list. It changes what I write next.
Questions
Section titled “Questions”Open an issue on GitHub.
